Getting Started

If you are under the age of 35 and have been trying to conceive for at least 12 months, or over 35 and trying to conceive for at least 6 months, it is recommended that you seek assistance.  Below is a step-by-step guide to how to start this process:

STEP 1:  Arrange a Free Fertility Consultation

The first step in starting your fertility journey is to make a free appointment with one of our fertility nurse specialists.  This is a private, one-on-one consultation which allows us to gain some information about your fertility difficulties and give you some information about your treatment options.  Our fertility nurse specialists are empathetic to your situation and will take the time to listen to your story.

We understand that when you work full-time it’s not easy to get time off work to attend appointments and have tests, so for your convenience, we offer After Hours Initial Interviews and weekend Semen Analysis appointments.  Call now as appointments are limited.

Your first consultation is free.  Simply call us on 1300 337 845 or click here.

If you decide to proceed with treatment, your personal fertility nurse will then organise the relevant screening tests for you and your partner.

STEP 2: Arrange a GP Referral

In order to see one of our Fertility Doctors, you will need a referral from your GP/local doctor. Ask your GP for an “indefinite referral” which will stay current throughout your entire fertility treatment journey.  If you don’t ask for an indefinite referral you will be required to see your GP every year to request a new referral.  Please note that if you get a referral from another specialist, this is only current for three months.  Your referral must be current in order to claim from Medicare.  If you’re not sure which of our Fertility Doctors to see, please refer to our Fertility Doctors page.

In addition to the indefinite referral for the Fertility Doctor of your choice, we would recommend that you obtain a second referral from your GP at the same time.  Given that male factor infertility is usually the easiest to be diagnosed, the other referral is for a semen analysis and sperm antibodies test.  This will need to be addressed to Fertility Solutions, and we will forward a copy of your results to your chosen Fertility Doctor.

To make the process easier we can provide your GP with referral pads that are easy to complete and will provide your fertility specialist with relevant information about you.  We can also provide your GP with a Semen Analysis referral pad that can be used when referring you to Fertility Solutions for this test. Your GP can call Fertility Solutions on 07 5478 2482 and we will post these to the surgery.

STEP 3: Perform Screening Tests & Semen Analysis

There are a number of screening tests that are recommended prior to commencing fertility treatment.  These will allow our team to tailor your treatment to give you the best possible chance of success.  A list of the recommended screening tests can be viewed on our pre-requisite tests page.

Test results can take up to 6 weeks to be performed and a cycle cannot commence until these have been reviewed by your Fertility Doctor.

STEP 4: See Your Fertility Doctor

At your meeting with your Fertility Solutions Doctor, results from all your screening tests will be reviewed and discussed with you and your partner.  Your Specialist will provide you with information and advice about the treatment choices available and suggest the one most suitable for your situation.  If you have already had relevant tests done, or have had treatment elsewhere, it would be helpful if you brought along any information that you have.

Not all couples will need to proceed directly to intensive, high-tech treatments such as IVF.  Your Fertility Solutions Doctor may recommend that you begin with a more gentle approach, such as Ovulation Induction (OI) or Intra Uterine Insemination cycles (IUI).  The treatment most suitable for you will be determined by the cause of your fertility issue(s).

At this meeting, a cycle plan for your upcoming treatment will be created and sent to your personal fertility nurse specialist.  You will also be required to complete relevant treatment consents with your Doctor.   If you have any questions or concerns after this consultation please feel free to contact your fertility doctor or nurse for clarification.

As soon as all tests results for you and your partner have been reported, we can get started with treatment as soon as you’re ready.  During this time you will have access to ongoing personal medical attention including your Fertility Solutions Doctor, who will oversee your care; your own small team of appointed nurses, as well a scientist who will be involved with your treatment.  You can communicate directly with anyone in your healthcare team should you have any questions.

We look forward to being able to Share Your Journey for Life – thank you for choosing Fertility Solutions. Schedule your free fertility consultation with one of our fertility nurse specialists.
